In my opinion, the past holds most of an individual’s present state of being, which indicates how strong of an influence it is. It is from the decisions of an individual and all sorts of experiences he/she has gone through that molds him/her into the consciousness that he/she is in now. It is in these experiences or memories even, of an individual that he/she holds on to in order to recognize himself/herself. For example, the past contributes to the process of acquaintance wherein as two strangers meet and get to know each other’s past, the more they judge each other by that same basis. Another example is a traumatic memory that holds back an individual access from the elements of that terrible experience. One more example is ancestry, wherein some people tend to find it important to know about their family’s past in order to define themselves. Also, the transition from childhood, to adolescence, until the point of adulthood where an individual keeps a sort of memento from those periods such as a piercing, a tattoo, his/her very first car, or even the simplest photographs prove as the strongest influences of an individual’s perception. I believe in this definition of how the past affects an individual because my past is who I am today. Only a few people know me, or anything about me, because they were a part of my past, which of course includes my family. It is in my past that I hold my values, ethics, my views, my opinions and such.
I believe the past and future are both at the same level of uncertainty. I base this upon the fact that the past determines the future, and upon the discussion we had in class about the weirdness of what would happen with different decisions made in the past. This creates the idea of some sort of “multiverse” (taken from the movie “The One”) or a whole lot of realities created from the tiniest decisions at a specific setting at different points in time. As a conclusion, I believe that everything is uncertain at different point of views concerning time. I would say that the future would be more interesting because it is predicted, compared to the past wherein everything was mostly proven, albeit the fact of creation versus evolution. The future would be more interesting because it would be where the past might also be proven thoroughly as well.
